Fingal Bay Fishing Club Rules

These guidelines are provided to encourage all members to operate in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, to participate in and enjoy the sport of fishing, and to inform those who compete in the weigh-in and/or brag mat competitions.

Members are expected to consult with and adhere to NSW State Fisheries guidelines at all times.

Competition Categories

Competition is divided into two categories which run concurrently, but are independent of each other:

1) Weigh-in (fish caught and weighed during a scoring weekend):

  • Fishing starts Friday at 3pm on the weigh-in weekend.

  • Weigh-ins take place at the club on Sunday at 4pm. No fish will be accepted after 4:30pm.

  • Fish may be entered under one of three categories: Deep Sea, Estuary, Land Based.

2) Brag Mat (fish caught anytime outside a scoring weekend):

  • Fish must be clearly photographed on a brag mat showing length, and sent on the date caught.

  • Photos must be sent to the President and Weigh Master.

  • This is an honour system.

  • The Weigh Master's decision is final on acceptable fish and recorded lengths.

Weighing in Fish

  • All fish must be fresh (not frozen), gilled and gutted – exception for Flathead and Bream.

  • Anglers must be present when their fish are weighed.

  • NSW Fisheries size and bag limits apply to all species covered by the Fingal Bay Fishing Club, except: Garfish, Leather Jacket, Nannygai, Whiting, and Flounder are limited to 10 per weigh-in.

  • Some fish have no State limits; while legal, anglers are encouraged not to bring very small fish.

  • Fish caught while trolling may be shared equally between anglers for weigh-in purposes.

  • Flathead length: minimum 36cm (juniors 33cm, except Dusky).

  • Flathead max size for weigh-in: 60cm.

  • Bream max size for weigh-in: 40cm.

    • Fish above these sizes earn points from a brag mat photo: 1 point per 100g based on Fisheries brag mat average weights.

    • This calculation will only count towards weigh-in points.

    • These fish will only be eligible in the brag mat category.

  • Points:

    • First fish of each species: 10 points + 10 points per kilo.

    • Each additional fish: 1 point + 10 points per kilo.

Prizes

Weigh-ins remain the major focus of the club. To be eligible for prizes, an angler must weigh in at least 3 scoring weekends.

  • Champion Angler – in each of the 3 categories

  • Female Champion Angler

  • Junior Champion Angler

  • Heaviest of Each Species – Weigh-in

  • Overall Heaviest – Weigh-in
